10 Ideas: Orange

Here are useful tips on how to weave citrus cheer into your everyday dishes and drinks.

Here are useful tips on how to weave citrus cheer into your everyday dishes and drinks.

Chill with a tall glass of orange iced tea! Go to # 4 to know how

1  Have a citrus morning!
Next time you cook your morning oats, use 1 cup water, 3/4 cup orange juice with a cup of your favorite oatmeal, a pinch of salt, a dash of cinnamon, some brown sugar, and milk to taste. When oatmeal has cooled, add a few sectioned oranges and slivered almonds—both great toppings for this nutritious breakfast bowl.

2  Season with orange

Martha says, “Make your own orange salt,” for fish or chicken dishes. Use a vegetable peeler to zest an orange. Toss the zest into a boiling pot of 1 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar and lower to a simmer. After 35 minutes, strain and bake at 275ºF until dry. Cool completely and place in a spice grinder along with salt, pepper, dried rosemary, and a pinch of chili powder to taste. Ta-dah, salt!

3  Make orange chicken

Brown 3 salted and cubed chicken breasts in butter on a skillet. Transfer chicken to baking pan and add 2 tablespoons flour, 1/4 teaspoon each of dry mustard and cinnamon, add 1/8 teaspoon of ginger and 1 1/2 cups OJ to the remaining butter. Drizzle half of sauce on chicken before putting in oven at 350ºF. Bake until chicken is tender, plate with rice, and drizzle with remaining sauce.

4  Project: D-I-Y iced tea

Try making your own summer iced tea from scratch! Make iced tea concentrate by steeping 4 teabags of your choice in a large pitcher of hot water for five to 10 minutes. Add about half a cup of sugar, adjusting to your liking. Then add the juice of 3 to 4 oranges into the tea. Serve with some
orange slices.

5  Orange marmalade

Keep a jar of orange preserves handy at home to use alone on your morning toast, or paired with butter or cream cheese. Other ways to use orange preserves: Add 2 teaspoons to your Orange Tea or add it to a cup of plain creamy yogurt.

6  Orange-sicles, yum!

Make your own popsicles at home with fresh oranges: Take 2 cups of freshly squeezed orange juice alone (or add a cup or so of creamy plain yogurt) and pour into popsicle molds or into an ice tray covered with foil to hold popsicle sticks in place. Freeze and enjoy!

7 Prepare a fruit bowl

Cut down on carbs and use orange juice, instead of the usual cream and sugar, to bring your after after-dinner fruit salad together. While you’re at it, throw in some orange wedges, mango bits, and apple chunks.

8  Into the fondue

Dipping oranges in chocolate fondue isn’t the only way to use oranges with chocolate. Next time, try adding the juice of half an orange (or more) to the melted chocolate to liven up the taste.

9 Try it: Candied Orange Peels

Bring 3/4 cup water to a boil in a small saucepan over medium heat with 1/2 cup sugar. Add the zest of an orange and let simmer, stirring occasionally until it is translucent, about 15 minutes. Drain and coat in about 4 tablespoons superfine sugar. You can also dip these treats in chocolate! For more ways to enjoy citrus rind, click here.

10  Float away
Fill a tall glass with your favorite orange soda, top with an orange segment, and a generous scoopa ice cream. Or try making an orange spritzer—use the juice of one orange and fill the rest of the glass with soda water. Add a few orange segments and lemon mint leaves for a refreshing finish.
