1 Yogurt FYI
Yogurt is a dairy product produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria cultures acts on milk protein, giving the yogurt its pudding-like texture and distinctive tang.
2 Health buff
One cup of yogurt a day provides 47% of one's daily calcium requirement, 26% of daily protein requirement, vitamin B, potassium, and other nutrients the body needs.
3 Lactose intolerance tolerant?
Do you know that most people who are lactose intolerant, those who cannot digest a sugar named lactose that is found in milk and dairy products, can actually enjoy yogurt because it is more digestible than milk. That's because the culturing process of yogurt creates lactase (the enzyme that lactose intolerant people lack) and another enzyme contained in some yogurts (beta-galactosidase), which helps improve lactose absorption.
Eating at least 8-oz. of yogurt daily helps prevent infections or may even fight yeast infections. But make sure you use unsweetened or artificially sweetened for best results. The bacteria helps lower the pH of the vaginal area, creating an environment that is inhospitable to Candida albicans, the yeast that commonly causes infections. To know more, click here.
5 Fresh is best!
"Once you take the yogurt off the refrigerated shelf, its live cultures start to deteriorate. By the time you get home from the grocery store, the cultures may already be dead and all you get is cream," says Josie Paule, President and Country Manager of Cambert Phils., makers of EasiYo Yogurt. Eating freshly made yogurt is the best way to reap its many health benefits. Plus, it lasts up to 2 weeks, chilled.
