Cooking with My Daughter

Jackie shares with us the joy of cooking with Kylie. Send us similar stories and win!

I have been playing in the kitchen since I was 10 years old. For me, it was my playground and my mother encouraged me. I guess this is how I found my way to what I wanted to do in life. Ever since then, I knew I wanted to work in the kitchen. 24 years later, I’m still in the kitchen and loving every minute of it. Whether cooking at home, making new recipes for Fleur De Lys, or whipping up new desserts on TV for True Confections, I always get excited with each recipe I discover. I try to imagine the taste and texture of the recipes even before I make them. And when I get it right, ahhh… the feeling of victory is the sweetest.

Now, how does this translate to my life as a mom? I told myself that I would support whatever my daughter wants to be when she grows up. I want her to be passionate with her chosen career and to do her very best and be successful. Being just four years old, my daughter Kylie’s “chosen” career changes from day to day—from ballerina to mermaid to princess (obviously, Disney is a big influence on her!). But I just let her be, the same way my mom let me do whatever I wanted.

But the first time she actually held a pastry bag and made “worms” to decorate my gingerbread cookies, I was the proudest mom of all. But still, I didn’t want to influence her too much. I just bought her a wooden toy set of baking tools. She’d crack wooden eggs and whisk them until stiff enough for cookies then use my cabinet as her oven. She even used the wooden birthday candles. (She dropped them in the “batter” though!)

Kylie, just like her mom

One day, she surprised me by actually baking a tray of brownies with her yaya. She said, “Mommy, I have a “supyais” (surprise) for you. I made you a cake!” Yaya apparently saw a box of ready-to-mix brownies in my pantry and let Kylie play “chef” like mommy. She even used my metal spatula to ice it with frosting and decorate it with lines. Of course, she was eating the frosting while she was decorating it. She also called my mother-in-law to say that she was bringing a cake for them.

I was in Chef Mommy Heaven. I know, I know. I promised not to influence her career path. But it tugged my heart to see that my daughter appreciates what I do for a living and maybe, just maybe, one day, she might consider becoming a chef as well. But until that day comes, she can be “my number one best princess Ariel mermaid ballerina girl.”

Greetings! I just sent it at the eleventh hour my essay regarding my 9-year-old son Jericho Andrew who shares an irrepressible passion for the culinary arts just like yours truly. Here's hoping my story is prize-worthy. At any rate, thank you for the opportunity to share it with you guys. God bless!
