Best Local Food Blogs: Part 2
Here are three more of the local blogs that made it to the best list.
The Thirsty Blogger (www.thirstyblogger.com).
Most food and beverage blogs tackle main dishes, recipes and restaurant reviews. And beverages are somewhat considered simply an accompaniment to a meal. Not with the Thirsty Blogger. From Pina Colada to shakes and coffee concoctions, The Thirsty Blogger has got his blog overflowing with interesting stories. Apart from beverages, the readers can treat themselves to features on dessert places (since they come hand-in-hand with tea and coffee), bars and other restaurants. Not only confined to beverage reviews, the Thirsty Blogger also features recipes, the blog creator, Fitz Villafuerte, concocted himself. So if you want to prepare a healthy fruitshake, or a home version of a Starbucks latte, look no further because the blog certainly quenches your thirst for drinks.
The blog’s emphasis is mostly on beverages. Why is that?
I write about beverages for several reasons. First, it gives my blog a unique brand because not many people write about drinks, much less focus on it. Second, it’s cheaper. If you think about it, beverages are usually less expensive than gourmet food. So I can go to any restaurant, order their bestselling drink, blog about it, and not break my budget.
Lastly, I go to bars and coffee shops more often than I eat in restaurants so blogging about drinks is more convenient for me.
What are the other things you blog about?
In The Thirsty Blogger, I also write about places, events and health--restaurants and coffee shops that I’ve tried, events I’ve attended, and occasional thoughts about health. (Ed's blog: Apart from his drink blog, he also writes about business and personal finance in his other blog, Ready to Be Rich – http://fitzvillafuerte.com)
Do you plan to expand your blog to a full-blown food blog? Why or why not?
I don’t think I’d want to take that path and make it a full-blown food blog. Primarily because I’ve discovered that there’s so much I can write about just by sticking to beverages. Aside from the usual ice blended drinks and juices, there are so many products out there in the market that is worth blogging about like energy drinks, diet shakes and others.
Do you ever get in trouble when expressing your opinion in your blog?
For The Thirsty Blogger, not yet and I hope that it never happens. One rule of thumb I follow is to always try to be objective, honest and never ever write insulting words about a product, a person or a place.
Does keeping a blog affect your job?
I’m currently busy managing my own businesses and doing freelance work. Since I am fully in control of my time, blogging very rarely conflicts with my schedule. Furthermore, I consider blogging as a creative avenue where I can just relax, be myself and have fun. I find going online and blogging as a great way to unwind after a busy day.
Name your most favorite beverages and where you had them.
This one is hard to answer so let me just tell you my most recent cravings. First, the Dark Cherry Mocha Frappucino of Starbucks. Second, the Milk Tea of Kopi Roti and last, the Mindoro Sling in Puerto Galera (I can’t wait for summer!)
If you were to concoct a beverage and give it a different spin, what will it be?
One successful experiment I recently had was to put fresh melon and strawberry ice cream together in a blender for a cool and creamy smoothie. Add a banana slice if you’re feeling adventurous. Try it and you’ll love it.
If The Thirsty Blog were a beverage, what would it be?
I think it would be a five-fruit smoothie composed of mango, banana, papaya, orange and kiwi. It’s a healthy mix of different fruits that surprisingly goes well together.
