We Stuffed Ourselves Silly with Chocolate Cake to Find the Best Boxed Mix

We tried White King, Betty Crocker, Maya, and Magnolia!

Why go through the trouble of making a cake from start to finish when you have boxed mixes to give you a hand? The magic of boxed chocolate cake mixes is that you only need to add three ingredients: oil, water, and eggs, to a bowl. Mix with a whisk, and you’re all set for baking! If time is not on your side, a mix that yields excellent results is a great option to have.

Each boxed mix in this month’s Yummy.ph Taste Test was made with exact measurements and baked in the same 7-inch cake tins until a toothpick poked into each cake came out clean. We paired these cakes with a quick chocolate ganache. Pile on as much as you want!

One recipe, two ingredients, three ways. Here's a quick run-down to making chocolate ganache for any dessert!

1 White King

From brownies, to pancakes, and even champorado—it’s clear to us now that White King boxed mixes never fail! Their chocolate cake mix was spot on with flavor. You can taste the fudge and feel the fudge in every bite. It’s a great mix for those who like heavy cakes with a firm bite, and lots of chocolate goodness. Remember to mix it well—the batter will be heavy.

2 Magnolia

Magnolia’s mix yielded a surprisingly light cake the rose the highest, despite having the heaviest, almost brownie-like cake batter. The cake had a tight crumb and had a lightness to it, and although lacking in chocolate flavor, would be great for stacking layer cakes. Remember to pair a tasty frosting with this cake mix.

3 Maya

Maya’s heavy cake batter also churned out a heavy cake with large holes. While it wouldn’t be your best pick for a layer cake, we’d recommend baking it as a sheet cake instead. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't dry out, too. If you’re not a fan of a bitter chocolate hit, pile lots of frosting on top!

Maya chocolate cake mix is available in leading grocery stores for P139.95.

4 Betty Crocker

Betty Crocker wasn’t kidding with its “super moist” description on their box. It yielded a light, perfectly moist, and flavorful cake that was easy to handle, easy to slice, and even easier to eat! Without a doubt, this mix takes the cake (pun intended). It is delicious as is, but even better with a fudgy chocolate ganache on top. Dig in!
