How to Tell If Brownies Are Done Baking

Brownies are a little bit more tricky to judge in doneness compared to cakes and cookies. They’re deep, dark, chocolate brown in color and very dense—which means the usual tell-tale signs of golden brown edges and puffy centers do not stand. Here is how to bake your brownies into fudgy treats and avoid over-baked or burnt edges.

 

1  The surface of your brownies should start to crack and crinkle. The center should be set, slightly moist, but not watery.

 

2  When you insert a toothpick 1 inch away from the edge of the pan and it comes out clean, your brownies are ready to come out of the oven. Remember: the residual heat will help the brownies bake and set further.
