What is there to do with all that sugar in the pantry? Whip it up into a creamy frosting for cupcakes, of course! This infographic shows off four basic frosting tips and how their finished frosting results shape up.

Excited to start decorating? Here are a few guidelines on how to get pretty swirls on top of your cupcakes.

1  First things first: get your baking gear ready!

You will need a piping bag, a coupler, and a frosting tip. If you have none of these with you right now, do not fret! You can easily frost your cupcakes without them.

2  Only decorate your cupcakes when they have cooled down to room temperature.

We know—piping out frosting is the best part and you are super excited to get started. The one or two hour wait to cool off those cakes will be very well worth it: you don’t want your frosting to melt and ruin your baking masterpieces.

3  Make a sturdy and stable frosting.

Buttercream works best: it is light, fluffy, and holds up its shape very well. Whip your butter with sugar very well and as much as possible, use gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring. Too much liquid may make your frosting runny.

4  Fill your piping bag at least halfway with frosting.

One of the most frustrating things in prepping cakes is running out of frosting in the middle of decorating a cupcake! Avoid this common mishap by place a sufficient amount of icing in your bag.

5  Use constant pressure when squeezing your piping  bag.

Starting at the outside edge of your cupcake, squeeze the piping bag with steady and constant pressure while working your way around and into the middle. Build up a second layer of the frosting swirl until you hit the middle, then pull the bag upwards to release. Ta-da!
