Here’s a savory bread that can accompany any meal—be it ham and eggs for breakfast or steak and vegetables for dinner.
Yield 2 9x4x3-inch loaves Prep Time 2 hours Baking Time 40 to 45 minutes
2 teaspoons instant yeast
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup fresh milk
1/3 cup butter, plus more for brushing
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese or queso de bola
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 Mix instant yeast with water and milk. Add butter, eggs, salt, and 1 cup flour. Mix well then add the remaining flour.
2 Stir in cheese and ground pepper. Scrape dough from the sides of the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm area until dough has doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
3 Grease bottom and sides of a loaf pan (Learn how to grease a pan here). Using an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, beat the bread dough for at least 3 minutes before spreading evenly into the pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until dough has doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
4 Preheat oven to 350ºF. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until loaf is brown. Immediately remove bread from pan and cool completely on a wire rack. Brush bread with more butter to finish.
