To minimize mess, place the cheese sauce in a squeeze bottle and squirt away.
Makes 8 patties
500 grams ground beef or ground round
3 tablespoons finely chopped celery
3 tablespoons finely chopped onions
1 1/2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup dry breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon liquid seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons oil, divided
1/2 cup butter, divided
8 dinner rolls, halved
chips, to serve (optional)
For the cheese sauce
1/2 cup cheese spread
2 tablespoons milk
1 In a large mixing bowl, combine beef, celery, onions, pickle relish, egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix well with your hands or with a wooden spoon. Season with liquid seasoning, salt, and pepper; mix well.
2 Measure 1/3 cup of the beef mixture, roll it into a ball, and flatten to make a patty. Repeat with remaining beef mixture.
3 To cook the hamburgers, heat a tablespoon each of oil and butter in a medium frying pan. Cook 2 to 3 patties at a time, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining patties.
4 Melt remaining butter (about 1/4 cup) in the microwave. Brush insides of the rolls with melted butter. Toast rolls for 1 to 2 minutes or until warm.
5 Make the cheese sauce: Combine cheese spread and milk in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted. Mix until smooth.
6 To assemble, sandwich hamburger patty between buttered rolls, drizzling patty with cheese sauce. Serve with chips on the side, if desired. Makes 8 sliders or mini burgers.
