Start the party right with this crisp, delectable treat. It also makes as a perfect snack at home or during road trips. Handle the puff pastry dough as little as possible and keep it cool. After thawing, work with one sheet at a time, keeping the rest in the refrigerator.
Serves 12 (as an appetizer) Prep Time 15 minutes Cooking Time 20 minutes
36 pieces cocktail frankfurters
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
2 (9 1/2-inch square) square sheets
frozen puff pastry, thawed
all-purpose flour, for dusting worksurface
1 1/2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 Preheat oven at 400ºF and line baking sheets with parchment paper. In a small bowl, lightly beat egg with water and set aside.
2 On a lightly floured work surface, cut one sheet of pastry into 3 strips measuring 3 inches. Cut each strip crosswise into 6 rectangles, each about 1 1/2 inches long.
3 Place a sausage on the narrow end of a pastry strip. Roll up to enclose the sausage. Set them on the baking sheet seam side down and press gently to seal. Repeat for the remaining sausages and pastry.
4 Brush the top with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Let chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
5 Bake until puffed and golden, about 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm with ketchup.
Leftover Tip If you have extra Italian sausage from the Baked Ziti with Italian Sausage and Peppers, use them in place of the cocktail frankfurters. Remove the casing, roll them up into small logs (about 2 1/2 inches long) and wrap each in a strip of puff pastry.
