Level off uneven bumps on top of the cake by laying the knife flat on one edge of the cake and gently sawing off the bumps from one end to the other with the use of a serrated knife.
Score the side of the cake according to how many layers you need. Keep the knife stationary as you rotate the cake counterclockwise, cutting around an inch deep.
Continue slicing the cake by dragging the knife closer to the middle, until you have sliced all the way through. Repeat with the rest of the layers.
