Draw your desired design (such as a star or a heart) on a piece of cardboard or paper and carefully cut out the shape.
Place the cutouts on the center of the cake or pastry and load a small strainer with powdered sugar; dust away.
Let the powdered sugar settle onto the cake for a minute or two before carefully lifting the cutouts.
