How to Make Flavored Oils

Make your own flavored oil concoctions at home!

By: Gino Gonzalez of CACS

You don’t have to troop to a gourmet deli for some fancy oil. Make your own concoctions at home—it’s as easy as mixing 1-2-3 ingredients!

You'll need:

For Tarragon-Lemon Oil
1 medium-sized lemon
6 sprigs of fresh tarragon
1 cup olive oil

For Paprika-Garlic Oil
1½ tablespoons paprika
1 head garlic, peeled
1 cup olive oil

For Basil-Orange Oil
1 bunch of basil
1 peel of medium-sized orange
1 cup olive oil

Yummy Ideas:
• Flavored oils not only go well with salads but they also make good marinades and tasty accents for dishes like grilled lamb. Drizzle on roasted potatoes and on sandwiches, or dip bread in it.
• Cut large vegetables into small wedges so they’ll fit the bottle. Hold them together inside the bottle with the use of bamboo skewers.
• Any neutral oil can be an alternative to olive oil. Use canola or vegetable oil as substitute.

Careful! Preserve water-containing ingredients like garlic, lemon peel, and fresh peppers in a strong brine or vinegar solution before using them to flavor the oil. This will eliminate the chances of bacterial growth.
