3 Ways to Tell If Your Cake Is Done Baking

One of the biggest baking let-downs that could ever happen to a home baker is this: slicing into a cake that you put so much effort into, then finding out that it’s turned into a heavy, dense, and soggy mess. Under-baking your cakes can be a simple misstep if you are not aware of what signs to look out for. Here are three ways to tell if your cake is done baking into a fluffy, golden masterpiece!
1 The poke test.
Use a bamboo or metal skewer, or a cake tester, and poke the middle of your cake. If it comes out clean, then your cake is ready. However, it is best to look out for the next two steps before you pull your cake out of the oven.
2 Pillowy centers, and sides pulling away from the baking tin.
Lightly tap the center of your cake. A good sign of doneness is if the cake springs back and doesn’t sink down. Check the sides of the cake as well: if you see them slightly browning and pulling away from the sides, your cake should be ready!
3 Use a thermometer.
Just like proteins, the internal temperature of a cake can tell you when it’s ready to get out of the oven. If you really want to be sure of a cake’s doneness, look for this magic number with an instant-read thermometer: 210°F.
