5 Quick Tips to Baking Great Sugar Cookies
Get the basics down with this classic cookie!
Sugar cookies are simple, straightforward, and incredibly versatile! You can get creative with decorating them with royal icing, cream cheese frosting, sprinkles, and different colors of sugar. These cookies are also great for any occasion: birthday celebrations, summer cookouts, or rainy day kitchen experiments. To make flawless sugar cookie dough that is perfect for rolling and stamping out fun shapes, follow these five easy tips!
1 Chill out!
Buttery sugar cookie dough needs to be rolled out. Avoid making a sticky mess on your countertop by chilling your dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before rolling it out. Another easy tip for making sturdy sugar cookies? Don't bake them on a hot day!
2 Parchment paper is your best friend.
Sandwich your cookie dough between two lightly floured pieces of parchment paper before you roll it out. The result? A perfectly flat layer of dough that is ready for cutting!
3 Let it rest.
Overworking your dough can result to tough cookies. Also, the flavors of butter and vanilla will not cut through as strongly as they should. Mix your dry ingredients into your wet ingredients until just combined. Knead it slightly until everything comes together, and then let the dough rest in the refrigerator before rolling and cutting.
4 Be bold with flavor!
Tired of the regular vanilla bean flavoring? Try adding a dash of almond extract or a few pinches of lemon rind to your dough and see how you like it! No time to decorate your cookies with royal icing? Use them for cookie sandwiches and fill them with peanut butter and jelly!
5 Dip it!
Pour ¼ cup of flour into a shallow dish and dip the bottom edges of your cookie cutters into flour before stamping out pieces of dough. Pesky pieces of cookie dough will stay out of the small nooks and crannies of your cutters.
