5 Things You Should Never Forget to Do Before Baking a Cake

Cake baking, as fun as it is, always gets a little technical when it comes to how your prep for the recipe and how you put the ingredients together. To make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible before you start whipping up that batter, we listed down 5 important reminders that will help keep all your ducks in a row.

 

 

1 Check if you have all the tools and ingredients that you need.

This one sounds like a no-brainer, but reading the recipe thoroughly always pays off. Once you're done checking the ingredients list, read the procedure and make sure that you know how to do all the baking techniques required for the recipe-cakes often involve whipping, folding, and swift movements because cake batter needs to go into the oven as quickly as possible.

 

 

2 Preheat your oven.

Speaking of ovens-remember to preheat yours once you start putting your cake batter together. You will definitely be incorporating air into your batter to make sure your cakes a fluffy and light. If the batter sits too long outside the oven, it will start losing all the air you worked so hard to incorporate. Most ovens take around 15 to 20 minutes to heat up.

3 Check the position of your oven racks.

When baking a cake, you're safest with positioning your racks in the middle of or in the lower third of your oven. If you're making two layers or using two pans, remember to rotate the pans halfway through baking and switch layers so that both cakes bake evenly.

 

 

4 Know how to prep your cake pans.

Every cake recipe is different. Do your pans need a light brush of oil? Or do they need to be brushed with butter and dusted lightly with flour? Sometimes, the bottoms need to be lined with parchment paper. Make sure that you have all the tools you need to prep your pans properly.

 

 

5 Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature or at the temperatures that they should be in.

Trust us, you will completely regret using too-cold butter or eggs for a cake! Your batter will not come together smoothly if you use ingredients at different temperatures. Worry not-there are a few easy ways to get your ingredients to warm up quickly. Place cold eggs in lukewarm water for a few minutes to bring it to room temperature, and cube your butter and leave it on the counter for a few minutes to get it to soften up.
