Bake Moist Cakes with This Surprising Butter Substitute

When counting calories, homemade baked cakes seem to be completely out of the picture with all that soft, buttery goodness. One simple tweak in your baking recipe, however, can help you cut back on the extra fat, cholesterol, and calories.

The secret ingredient to using less oil and butter in baking at home? Applesauce.

The ingredient swap is simple. When using butter, switch out half of the total amount of butter with applesauce. For example, if the recipe calls for 1 cup of butter, replace half of it with applesauce. To replace oil with applesauce, simply exchange in equal amounts.

Remember that this ingredient substitute works best with heavy cakes, like carrot cake, banana bread, or honey spice cakes. Use unsweetened and unflavored applesauce for the best baking results, too!
