WATCH: How to Make an Apple Crumble Pie
Serve this pie with large dollops of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top!
The great thing about this pie is that you don’t have to be neat or tidy when you make it: use your hands to put the crumble together, toss the apples in lemon juice and sugar, then pop the pie into the oven. Digging into these layers will 100% be messy—but that’s the whole point of making this easy, fuss-free, no-frills apple crumble pie.
You can also experiment with additional flavors and ingredients—try spicing those apples with cloves, cardamom, and nutmeg, or throw in a handful of raisins and walnuts into the filling for more sweetness and crunch. Just don’t forget to add a dollop of cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!
Apple Crumble Pie Recipe
Serves 6 to 8
To make the oatmeal crumble:
3 cups rolled oats
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar, lightly packed
1 cup salted butter, softened
To make the filling:
4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped into 2-inch pieces
4 red apples, peeled and chopped into 2-inch pieces
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup plus 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar, or to taste
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Make the oatmeal crumble: Place the softened butter, oats, brown sugar, and flour into a large mixing bowl. Using a large wooden spoon or your hands, mix together until it forms a loose crumble. Set aside in the refrigerator until needed.
Make the filling: In a separate mixing bowl, mix the apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon together.
Arrange the apples in a 9-inch round pie dish. Top generously with the oatmeal crumble mixture, making sure all the apples are covered.
Bake for 80 to 90 minutes or until the tops of the pie is completely golden brown. Let cool on a baking rack. The apple crumble pie can be eaten warm or chilled.
