WATCH: How To Make Homemade Oreos

These homemade sandwich cookies are a real treat! With little time and effort, you'll find that you can have this iconic chocolate sandwich cookie with as much (or as little!) cream filling you want. The wonder of homemade cookies customized to your taste to make your favorite sandwich cookie just like you want it.  



Homemade Oreos (Chocolate Sandwich Cookies)


Takes 50 minutes plus chilling and cooling

Makes 16 sandwich cookies


3/4 cup salted butter, softened

3/4 cup powdered sugar, sifted

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (we used black cocoa powder)

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour


Cream Filling:

1/2 cup salted butter, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon heavy cream



Cream butter and sugar in the bowl of a mixer. Once creamed, add and beat in vanilla. Meanwhile, in another bowl, combine cocoa powder, cornstarch, flour in another bowl. Combine both mixtures on low speed. Gather dough into a ball and flatten into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, around 30-40 minutes.



Roll to 1/4-inch thickness, cut with cookie cutters, and transfer to a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake at 325?F/160?C for 16 to 18 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack.



Meanwhile, make Cream Filling: In a large bowl, cream butter and powdered sugar together until soft and fluffy. Add vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat until mixed. Set aside until ready to use.



To assemble, pipe or spoon filling onto the back of a chocolate cookie. Press another cookie to sandwich the filling. Repeat with remaining cookies and filling. Store in an airtight container.
