There's a difference between macarons and macaroons. While the French macaron is an almond cookie, the macaroons the average Filipino knows are coconut cookies, usually made with egg whites, condensed milk, and the leftover niyog from making gata or coconut cream.

It's a super easy cookie recipe to make that is also easy to make even more delicious! Here are other ways you can do to make your macaroons taste better:

1 Add chocolate.

The typical macaroon may seem and look boring, so why not make it more appetizing with chocolate? You can drizzle the coconut cups with melted chocolate or dunk the bottoms of the coconut cookies in the melted chocolate for a delicious base. You can even use white chocolate, too!

2 Stir in fruits.

The condensed milk of the original macaroon recipe is mainly to add sweetness to the cookie. Swap that out and use crushed pineapple instead to add a fruity sweetness to the coconut. Pineapples and coconut are a delicious pairing so if you want to try this combo, make the switch!

3 Make a leche flan batter.

The condensed milk is already a testament to how rich the macaroon can be. This recipe takes that creaminess to another level but making the mixture into a true leche flan batter and adding coconut to the mix. The result is a custard coconut dessert that is sinfully delicious!

4 Add ube.

Apparently, few people can resist a dessert that's made with ube. That's why this macaroon is so gloriously appetizing! The ube halaya is a vibrant color compared to an otherwise yellow dessert. Plus, the earthy flavor of the ube is a delicious complimentary flavor to the sweetness of the condensed milk.

5 Mix in dried fruits.

Coconut is a versatile ingredient so mixing other ingredients into the batter results in a delicious combination of flavors. Try adding chopped fried fruits such as mangoes, papaya, or even dried apricots, cranberries, and raisins if you like them to the coconut macaroon? The dried fruits give the macaroon a burst of fruity sweetness that you can't find elsewhere.
