Your baking project is going to be a disaster if you don't know the difference between wax paper and parchment or baking paper. That is because these two kinds of paper are different and used in very different ways.

Don't be confused by the two kinds of paper! Available in both your leading supermarket and baking supply stores, baking paper or more commonly as parchment paper is what is usually called for when baking. It's what lines your baking tray when baking cookies and what prevents your cakes from sticking to your baking pan.

Parchment paper is coated in a thin layer of silicone or another heat nonstick coating to make it slick. This lining won't melt when heated, and it is this quality that makes it indispensable in baking recipes.

Wax paper, meanwhile, is literally paper coated in a thin layer of wax. Since wax melts when heated, not only will you have a dish that will have wax in it, the paper will also probably stick to your food.

How can you tell what is the difference between wax and parchment paper?

Wax paper will definitely feel like it has a layer of wax coating it. It will be slightly tacky but won't be silky to the touch. It's thin enough to be quite see through or transparent. Parchment paper meanwhile will feel like paper with a slightly see-through appearance.

Learn how to tell the difference between these two kinds of kitchen paper, and your baking recipe will definitely not have paper in it and end up in the trash.
