Fried chicken will always be an easy favorite. The crunchy skin, succulent chicken, and overall delicious meal will please anyone who takes a bite. If you have an air fryer, however, not all fried chicken recipes will work in it. 

What you need to do to perfectly air fry chicken is to dry coat it. All this means is that the recipe you use should not be a battered fried chicken recipe. That's because the batter will not brown very well in an air fryer nor will it stay on the chicken. In fact, it might drip off as it cooks since there's only air, no oil, to keep it from falling off the chicken. 

You might think a thicker batter would solve that but you're just insulating the chicken from being cooked through. You'll instead end up with chicken that is not cooked through underneath the thick coating you put on it.

What recipe should you look for when you want air fryer fried chicken? Any chicken recipe that isn't dunked in a batter would work better in an air fryer. That's why the Pinoy-style fried chicken works so well in the air fryer! There's no batter hindering the skin from getting crisp. Plus, if you really wanted to, you can coat it in a crispy coating but only after it's been cooked through first. Only then can you dunk the cooked chicken in a thin coating of beaten eggs and then rolled in your choice of a crunchy breading. That's because if you put breading on it before cooking it through, it might brown or even burn before the chicken is cooked through. We highly suggest crackers, potato chips, or even corn chips for extra crunch.

Here's how to fry crunchy fried chicken in an air fryer: 

  1. 1 Prepare chicken as directed before seasoning. 
  2. 2 Season chicken with salt and ground pepper. (Use a dry spice and/or herb rub as desired.) 
  3. 3 Place chicken in the air fryer and cook for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F/180 degrees C. 
  4. 4 Remove the chicken from the air fryer and let cool. (Alternatively, chill overnight.)    
  5. 5 Dunk cooked chicken in beaten eggs then roll in your breading.
