The asparagus is not your common Filipino vegetable. It’s definitely not part of the Bahay Kubo song but in other countries, the green stalk is a French tradition served for all three meals on the day before one’s wedding. The veggie is rich in calcium, vitamin E, potassium, and aspartic acid, which can prevent you from getting fatigued and give you a boost in energy.

Beyond its nutritional values, asparagus is a delicious green vegetable that anyone can cook easily, especially when armed with some cooking tips.

How To Cook Asparagus

There are many ways to cook asparagus, and it’s quite easy when you realize that you do cook the stalks for very long. You can grill it, steam it, stir fry it, blanch it, and even leave it as is, raw.

Here’s how to easily cook asparagus:

  • Grilled: Place asparagus on the hottest area of the grill in one layer. Turn the stalks once charred and keep doing so until the stalks are tender about 3 minutes.
  • Steamed: Place asparagus on a heat-proof plate or basket. Place in the steamer and steam for 5 to 10 minutes depending on the thickness of the spears.
  • Stir fried: Depending on the length you cut the asparagus, these cook in about 1 minute over High heat.
  • Blanched: Just like steaming, this asparagus needs just enough cooking to be heated through and its green color is more vibrant than before it entered the hot water, about 3 minutes in boiling water.
