10 Delicious Ways to Play with Cheese
It's hard not to get cheesy about our love for cheese!
These cheese ideas could be a lifesaver! Whether it's shredded on top of a hotdog, browned and bubbly on top of lasagna, or stretchy mozzarella, it’s ridiculously hard to say no to cheese. Salty, creamy and bursting with umami, there’s no way you can go wrong with cheese. Here are a few ideas on how you can use it in the kitchen:
1 Add it to pancakes.
The trick to super moist pancakes is fresh cheese! Make a fluffy batter by mixing together a tub of fresh cheese like cottage or ricotta, and an equal amount of flour, a couple of eggs, a splash of oil, sugar, lemon zest, and a pinch each of baking powder and salt; then fry on a skillet with butter.
2 Easy as pie: add it to your pie crust.
Make a slightly savory crust for your tart apple pie by adding some cheese. All you have to do is add a good handful of finely grated cheddar cheese to the flour and butter mixture before adding the cold water and bringing the pie crust together. Top your finished apple pie with even more cheese before baking for added oomph!
3 Make mac and cheese.
Mac and cheese has got to be the ultimate when it comes to cheesy comfort eats. Who doesn’t love freshly cooked pasta coated in a rich cheese sauce?
4 Say yes to cheesy chowder.
You can make a mean bowl of chowder—even without the clams. Make a cheesy, potato-packed alternative by sautéing onions, garlic, and celery in a pot before stirring in all-purpose cream, chicken stock, diced potatoes, and a pinch of paprika. Simmer until potatoes are tender, then add generous shavings of your favorite salty cheese.
5 Season your fave dishes with cheese.
Why not season your dishes with cheese to make them even richer and tastier? Hearty stews like kaldereta and beef ragu, in particular, can get a lot out of a grating of sharp cheese. Just add a healthy dose of cheddar or Parmesan at the end of the stewing process and you’re good to go!
6 Use it to make a creamy custard.
Cheese is definitely for more than just grilled cheese sandwiches. You can use it to make a super creamy, extra stable custard. Just blend together sugar, eggs, milk, a pinch of salt, and some cream cheese, then use it to fill tart shells, make crème brûlée, and even whip up leche flan.
7 Can't go wrong with a cheese sauce!
Make a better cheese sauce by using beer as a base instead of milk! Start making a standard white sauce by cooking down flour and butter to make a roux, but instead of milk, pour in beer before thickening the mixture and stirring in the cheese. This malty mix goes great on top of toasted bread.
8 Mussels are better with cheese.
Baked mussels are actually easy to make. Just take some cooked mussels, open the shells, and top them with a mix of mayonnaise, grated cheese, minced garlic, paprika, and fish sauce. Bake in a 350°F oven or turbo broiler for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown.
9 Parm perfection: make Chicken Parmesan!
Make some cheesy chicken cutlets by using a simple Parmesan-crumb coating: Take some thinly pounded chicken breast fillets, coat them in flour and eggs, then dredge in a savory mix of dried parsley, Japanese breadcrumbs, black pepper, and grated Parmesan cheese. Shallow-fry in a skillet over medium heat to achieve golden brown deliciousness!
10 Make a brand new jam.
Forget about peanut butter; creamy cheese and fruit jam are the stars of our sandwich world. Pair your fave fruit jams with all sorts of cheese for a sandwich that’ll tickle your taste buds. Why not try making a rich kesong puti and guava jam sandwich, or a sweet and salty cheddar and strawberry toastie?
Ready to get cheesy? Stock up on your favorite cheeses then. Don’t be limited by this list. Whenever you feel like a dish isn’t quite complete or just needs a little something, just be glad that the answer is right in your fridge.
