Did You Know That You Can Make Other Things in a Coffeemaker?

Yes, you can make more than just plain coffee in that machine. We tested them for you!

Condo and apartment dwellers know how a small kitchen can limit their abilities in the kitchen. But if there’s one thing that coffee lovers will invest in is a coffeemaker, and if you're one of them, you can certainly do more than just brew coffee in it. In fact, did you know you can actually cook an egg in it?

We tested out a few things and they actually worked:

1 Make hot chocolate

Use the carafe or decanter for more than just coffee. If you love hot chocolate in the evenings, it’s just as fast and easy as your usual cuppa. Best of all, it’s made from scratch so it’s rich and flavorful—exactly how you want it.

Coffeemaker Hot Chocolate

Takes 15 minutes

Makes 4 servings

4 tablespoons cocoa powder

1/2 cup powdered milk

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 1/2 cups water

Vanilla extract, to taste

Ground cinnamon, to taste

1 Mix cocoa, milk, and sugar in the carafe. Place in the coffeemaker.

2 Prepare your coffee maker according to manufacturer’s instructions but without the coffee filter (you won’t need it since only water will filter through). Add water and turn on the machine.

3 Once hot water has filtered through to the carafe, add vanilla extract or cinnamon (if using) and stir to mix thoroughly. Pour into cups and serve topped with whipped cream or marshmallows as desired.

Want mocha instead? Make coffee as you would normally but still add the hot chocolate ingredients into the carafe so it combines as you brew.

Perk up rich, thick hot chocolate with a shot of coffee!

2 Cook instant noodles

Yes, you can. It’s just as easy and about as fast as on the stovetop only with much less fuss. Best of all, if you’re making pancit canton, the spout on the carafe makes pouring out the water much easier.

Takes 9 minutes
Makes 1 serving

1 pack instant pancit canton or instant mami noodles

2 1/2 cups water

1 Pour water into the coffee machine. Turn on the machine and wait for the water to drip into the carafe. Once done, let the instant noodles sit for about 1 minute. Stir and test for doneness. Let sit another minute if necessary.

2 Pour out the water (if making pancit canton) and transfer noodles to a bowl. Add then stir in seasonings as needed for the pancit canton. Or, if making instant mami noodles, pour out about 1/2 cup water out of the carafe. Add and stir in the seasoning packet until dissolved, and enjoy your instant mami.

3 Cook chicken noodle soup

If you have a little bit more time on your hands, you can make chicken noodle soup almost from scratch in your coffeemaker. Dried pasta will cook in the hot water but will take longer than it would if it were instant noodles. The heating pad under the coffee decanter meanwhile is hot enough to keep the water hot and thus, cook the pasta noodles as it sits.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Takes 20 minutes
Makes 2 servings

1 chicken bouillon cube

1 handful of dried spaghetti noodles, broken

2 1/2 cups water

1 small egg, beaten

1 can cooked chicken

1 cup sweet kernel corn

1 Place the bouillon cube and spaghetti noodles into the coffeemaker carafe. Pour water into the coffeemaker and turn on the machine. Let the water drip down into the carafe.

2 Once done, stir the water then slowly drizzle in the beaten egg. (The hot water should be hot enough to instantly cook the egg rivulets as it falls.) Add chicken and corn and let sit until noodles are cooked through about 10 more minutes.

Chicken soup is comforting, filling, and universally loved.

For an exotic and rich noodle soup, give this Thai-inspired dish a try. The creamy coconut milk, infused with red curry paste, is a delicious base for the chicken and noodles.

4 Cook arroz caldo for merienda

The great thing with instant mixes is that it contains everything you need all in one box. Rice porridge is just as great made in the coffeemaker as on the stovetop. The biggest difference is the task of having to remove the carafe to stir the rice to prevent it from sticking to the bottom, but the attention is just as much as you pay when cooking on a stove.

Instant Arroz Caldo

Takes 40 minutes

Makes 4 servings

1/2 pack arroz caldo mix

2 1/2 cups water

1 Place the arroz caldo mix into the coffeemaker carafe. Pour water into the coffeemaker and turn on the machine. Let the water drip down into the carafe. Regularly remove the pot from the coffeemaker and stir the mixture so the rice doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.

2 Once all the water has dripped down, stir and let sit, stirring occasionally to cook the rice. The hot water should stay hot to cook the rice. Let the mixture sit about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the rice is cooked through and is tender.

5 Make soft-boiled eggs.

Boiled eggs should be easy! A coffee maker heats up the water almost to boiling (but not quite) so all you have to do is add the eggs and let the heat of the water do its job.

Coffeemaker Soft-Boiled Eggs

Takes 17 minutes

Makes 3 eggs

3 medium eggs

3 cups water

1 Place eggs in the carafe and place in the coffee maker. Pour water into the coffee maker and turn on the machine. Let water drip into the carafe.

2 Once the water has dripped into the carafe with the eggs, time it. Let eggs sit in the hot water for 5 minutes for soft-boiled eggs. Let eggs sit for longer for eggs with harder yolks.
