Save Gas With This Boiled Egg Trick
It's extremely easy, too!
Who doesn’t love a hard-boiled egg? If you’re hungry, a little salt to go with your egg is all you need for instant satisfaction. Also, the egg's shell is its own, nifty, biodegradable, lunch box! You can practically just slip it in your bag for a clever little snack or side dish.
There are plenty of ways to cook a boiled egg. (Did you know you can cook a “boiled egg” by steaming it?) Most methods require the water to be boiling as the egg cooks. While it does, you’re basically babysitting a pot of boiling water. There’s only so much you can do in the 4-8 minutes. All those minutes will be consuming your gas too because to keep your water boiling, you need the fire at a high setting.
We think there’s no need to expend that much gas. There’s another super easy, more efficient, and gas-saving way to boil your eggs. Here’s how:
Step 1: Place eggs in saltwater.
Place your eggs, straight from the refrigerator, into a pot. Fill the pot with enough water to cover the eggs. Add a dash of salt into the water. If one of the eggs has a small crack, the salt (or even a little vinegar) will keep the egg white from seeping out into the water.
Step 2: Boil the water, turn it off and put the lid on.
Place the pot on the stove and turn the fire to medium-high heat. Once the water comes to a boil, turn off the heat and cover your pot. Only now can you set your timer to at least 10 minutes.
Step 3: Do something else.
While the eggs cooks, do the other things on your list: read a short story, watch an episode of your fave Netflix show, have a quick shower, or cook another meal. You have enough time to do something else without having to actively babysit those eggs.
Step 4: Peel under running water.
Once the timer rings, or any time after 10 minutes, take your pot off the stove and drain the water. You now have effortlessly made hard-boiled eggs that used the least amount of gas.
A fast and easy way to peel your eggs is to do it under running water. The water will help loosen the shells and will also cool down the temperature to keep your fingers from burning.
