Here’s How To Fry Food Using Less Oil
This easy cooking trick will save oil and eliminate splatter.
We know one of the fastest and easiest ways to put a meal on the table is to fry meat. Frying food develops delicious flavor, turning it into a beautiful golden brown color, and is easily done with little to no effort at all. Just heat up some oil in a pan, add the meat, and leave it submerged in the hot oil until it has become golden brown and delicious.
However, if you despair that you’re using more oil than you need or are trying to cut back on using that much oil, we have good news: you don’t have to deep fry everything. There’s a trick you can do to lessen the amount you use every time you cook. Instead of heating up enough oil to cover the bottom of your frying pan, lightly toss or brush your food with oil.
When food is covered in oil, the oil on the surface of the food you’re cooking that will heat up first. When the oil on its surface heats up, it will cook the food you’re cooking from the outside in.
This is the same technique you use when stir frying, but with less effort and lower heat. It’s also the same technique you use when using an air fryer or browning and crisping food in an oven. The surrounding heat will be enough to start the cooking process. Cook it long enough and you’ve got a lightly-fried food without using more than a cup of oil.
However, this technique isn’t for all fried food. Bacon, pork chops, and other kinds of food which contain fat which will render out as it cooks doesn't even need more oil. The rendered fat will act as a natural oil. This technique is best done with small pieces of meat or veggies without any fat to render out so you can still fry it: chicken chunks, dried fish, or small cubed potatoes and is best when using a non-stick pan so no matter how much oil is used, nothing will stick.
Curious how it’s done? Here’s what you do:
Place cut up pieces of meat into a large bowl. Add about 1 teaspoon per cup and then season with salt and pepper. Add additional seasonings as desired. Then gently toss until the food is lightly coated in oil and the seasonings. For larger pieces, such as a lean cut of pork or steak, lightly brush with oil and then season.
Heat up a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add your food. Let the oil become hot and hear it start sizzling. Stir regularly until the food is cooked through.
