You Can Cook Rice In The Microwave!
This brilliant hack can save you from cooking more than you need.
We all know that rice cookers are the¬†best at cooking rice. A Filipino¬†meal¬†is never complete without steamed white rice.¬†Your mom's chicken and pork adobo and sinigang na baboy are just¬†not as good when you don't have a nice mound of rice on your plate to eat with it.¬†¬†
There are those who are living in small apartments and condos where¬†having more than one medium-sized appliance¬†takes up too much countertop space. When the right proportions are used, rice is almost always perfectly cooked when you use a rice cooker. If you choose the¬†microwave over the rice cooker, however, you may be missing out on some awesome steamed rice.¬†¬†
If you still haven't mastered the art of cooking¬†rice on the stovetop, we have great news: you can cook rice in the microwave.¬†¬†¬†
We learned this neat hack of cooking rice in the microwave from Serious Eats. The theory is simple: add rice with water in a microwave-safe bowl, cover, and nuke it. Easy, right? It can be if you also note these tips on how to cook rice in the microwave:¬†
- 1¬†Prepare 1 cup rice, rinsed, and at least 1 cup water or as desired, but add an extra 2 tablespoons water¬†to compensate for the microwave's powerful evaporation.¬†
- 2 Place a kitchen towel, paper towel, or any non-tight fitting lid. You can even place a microwave-safe plate on top. A tight-fitting lid may cause water to boil over.¬†
- 3¬†Microwave on High or 100 percent for 10 minutes, then 15 more minutes on Medium or 50 percent power.¬†
- 4 Fluff rice and serve.¬† ¬†
It's also important to note that this method works best when using white rice.¬†Brown or even red and black rice need too much time and water to soften¬†and become tender in the microwave.¬†
