Here's an easy Spanish-style sardines recipe you can pull off at home!
Anything homemade definitely beats the store-bought variety and this Spanish-style sardines recipe is no exception! You can pull off this easy version with your trusty frying pan and customize the flavor to your liking. ¬†
1 cup salt
9 cups water
1 kilo small fish (milkfish, tunsoy, or tawilis), cleaned, scaled, and with heads cut off
1 carrot, sliced into rounds
2 cloves garlic
3 whole shallots, peeled
1/2 cup olive oil or corn oil, add more if needed
1 (135-gram) bottle pickle relish
salt and black pepper
1 Combine salt and water. Soak cleaned fish for 10 to 15 minutes and drain.
In a pan, add carrots, onions, garlic and brined fish. Add oil and pickle relish. Season with salt and pepper. The amount of liquid should be enough to cover the ingredients. Add more oil if necessary. Cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until fish is tender.
Store submerged in oil in sterilized bottles until ready to eat.
