Mashed potatoes are a great side to meaty dishes. Here's how to make creamy mashed potatoes at home:
Takes 40 minutes
Makes 6 servings
2 kilograms potatoes, scrubbed , rinsed
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/2 cup salted butter, cubed
1 cup fresh milk
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
Water, as needed
1 Place potatoes into a large pot. Pour enough water to cover. Add about 1 tablespoon salt to the water. Bring to a boil then lower heat to a simmer until potatoes are fork tender, 20 to 30 minutes.
2 Meanwhile, add butter then milk into a small saucepan. Season with salt and ground pepper. Heat over medium heat until the butter is melted and the milk is just warmed through. Keep warm.
3 Drain water from the potatoes in the pot. Keep potatoes in the now dry pot to dry out, about 5 minutes. Peel potatoes, discrading skins. Place cooked and peeled potatoes into a large bowl. With a potato masher, mash potatoes until moderately mashed.
4 Pour half the hot milk and butter mixture into the potatoes. Continue to use the masher to combine the milk mixture into potatoes, mashing as you go. Taste and add the remaining milk mixture. Stir again to combine. Season more to taste if necessary. Continue mashing until all the potatoes are to your desired consistency. Serve immediately or keep warm until ready to serve.
