8 Ways To Make Delicious Katsu
This breaded chop is easy to make at home.
One of the most popular menu items on a Japanese menu might be the tonkatsu. The tonkatsu, or breaded pork cutlet, is actually one of many different kinds of katsu. Translated, katsu means food that has been breaded so it can mean pork, chicken, fish, and even vegetables.
Katsu is basically the umbrella term for breaded and crispy food! If you love all things crispy and breaded, here are the different ways you can prepare a katsu and place it on top of rice:
1 Tonkatsu Recipe
There are quite a number of ways to make a tonkatsu recipe but all remain the same with this basic principle: it's a boneless pork cutlet, breaded and deep-fried until crispy on the outside but still juicy on the inside. The pork cutlet is cut from the same pork cut as the pork chop, the pork loin. The main difference is that the pork cutlet is boneless.
Bread the pork chop like you would normally and serve it with shredded cabbage with sesame dressing and a bowl of hot steamed rice for a simple katsu meal.
2 Katsudon Recipe
If you plan on eating your katsu in a bowl, you're eating a katsudon. A katsudon is just a breaded pork cutlet that is served in a bowl of rice, the "don". What's interesting about this dish is that it's topped with a mirin- and dashi-sweetened egg with lots of onions. It creates a super tasty meal. Plus, it's easy to eat since it's in a bowl!
3 Tonkatsu Sandwich Recipe
A katsu sandwich is basically a breaded pork chop placed between bread slices. You can also make a sandwich where the bread is replaced with rice. Also known as onigiri, this version of a tonkatsu sandwich is basically a great big rice ball. Instead of being stuffed with a sushi-like filling, the rice ball is shaped and formed around a breaded pork chop. You can even place it between a sliced burger bun for a fun twist to the sandwich!
4 Torikatsudon Recipe
If you make this breaded dish with chicken, it's no longer "tonkatsu" but a "torikatsu". Place this breaded chicken on top of rice with the same sweetened egg and you have a torikatsudon.
5 Chicken Katsu Curry Recipe
Take that breaded chicken, serve it with a Japanese curry sauce, complete with the potato and carrot chunks, and you have a katsu curry. The curry of the Japanese is a fantastic sweet, savory, and sometimes spicy sauce that is a great complement to the savory crunch of the katsu.
6 Fish Katsu Curry Recipe
Chicken and pork aren't the only food you can make into katsu! Fish fillets are just as meaty and delicious to make into a katsu! This version uses a fish fillet instead of those two kinds of meat for a Lent-friendly version of your favorite katsu curry meal.
7 Prawn Katsu Recipe
Yup! Even prawns or shrimp can be made into katsu! It doesn't have to stop there. There are so many kinds of seafood! You can bread crab sticks, too! Big and succulent oysters can be shucked, breaded, and deep-fried. Then, instead of stuffing these into a po'boy-style sandwich, serve it with the prawn and crab sticks for a seafood bowl!

There are many ingredients that you can bread. This Japanese fried rice recipe is made even more delicious and very kid-friendly because the katsu is made with ham.
