Here's How You Use Calamansi in the Kitchen

Make both sweet and savory dishes with this tart ingredient!

Calamansi is one of the most well-loved ingredients used in Filipino cooking and baking. This bright green fruit is tart, juicy, and packed with Vitamin C. Be proud of our favorite local citrus fruit by experimenting with it in the kitchen. It could take your dishes to the next level! 


1 Sip on a breakfast sangria. 

Why? Because we're approaching the weekend A.K.A brunch season. Mix 2 sliced oranges, 1 cup strawberries, and 500 ml white wine in a pitcher. Refrigerate overnight. When ready to serve, add 1/2 cup calamansi juice and 500 ml sparkling water and mix. 


2 Freeze a granita. 

Steep 1-2 bags of chai tea in 2 cups of hot water. Discard the tea bags and add 1/3 cup calamansi juice and 3/4 cup of white sugar. Place in a freezer-friendly tray or baking dish for 30 minutes. Take the tray out and scrape the mixture with a fork. Keep doing this in 30-minutes intervals until completely frozen and when the mixture looks like coarse sand. Freeze overnight and scrape down one last time before serving. 



3. Make flavored salt or flavored sugar. 

To make flavored salt, combine 1/4 cup coarse sea salt and 1/2 teaspoon calamansi zest in a food processor. Store in an airtight container. Flavor your meats or veggies with this salt for an extra layer of flavor. To make flavored sugar, blitz 1 cup of turbinado or white sugar with 2 teaspoons of calamansi zest in a food processor. Store in an airtight container. Use this sugar to top cookies, toss in nuts, or incorporate it in your next cake
