Make it better with these tweaks.

Merienda can be one of the hardest meals to prepare for. It's the one meal that you can indulge your cravings with something sweet, salty, savory, sour, or even all of the above! When your tastes run towards the sweet and crispy side, you might turn to turon as your merienda for the day.

However, you do not have to settle for your usual turon. Here are ways to level up your turon recipe to take it from ordinary to extraordinary:

1 Add ube jam.

It sounds like a simple enough thing to do: add ube to turon. However, the tricky part is ensuring that the ube halaya doesn't melt and ooze out of the lumpia wrapper. To ensure that it doesn't, wrap it tightly so none of the jam comes out when you fry it.

2 Use tikoy and langka.

If you love langka when it's in halo-halo and tikoy when it's gooey soft fresh from the frying pan, you'll love the textures it gives this turon. The langka gives the turon a delicious sweetness that's unlike the banana while the tikoy makes it chewy soft. It's a delicious contrast to the crunch of the lumpia wrapper.

3 Dust with cinnamon and drizzle with a buttery sauce.

It's not often you get to taste a truly marvelous dessert. In this case, the turon gets the fancy treatment. The bananas are flash-fried in a rum-induced flambé and then dusted with a little ground cinnamon. To cap it all off, it's served with an ice cream scoop and butterscotch sauce is drizzled all over for that fine dining experience you can have at home.

4 Substitute banana with mangoes.

Turon doesn't need to be made with bananas! For this recipe, the bananas are swapped out and another fruit is used: mangoes. It's a delightful swap that will make you wonder why nobody else has done this switch before now!

5 Add cheese.

Leveling up a recipe can be as simple as adding an unexpected ingredient! In this case, the ingredient is savory, salty cheese. The sweet bananas and the brown sugar that usually complements each other get a salty kick from the gooey melty cheese.

6 Add Choc-Nut.

The sweet saba bananas are made even more delicious and irresistible with the addition of chocolate and peanuts. It's a combination that works so well when made into pancakes, crepes, and even sandwiches!

7 Make it with banana and rum.

Bananas and rum are classic flavors, so if you love this flavor combination, you'll love this version in turon form. The syrup is simmered and caramelizes on the outside of the turon. To make it even more delicious, a creamer powder mix seals its fate as your new favorite way of enjoying turon.
