1 Handpick, as much as possible.
There are often fixed prices for your produce, especially for onions, ginger, garlic, potatoes, tomatoes, and many more. If they are stashed in open boxes for you to pick out the ones you want, always go for it! It’s better than picking up a pre-packed plastic and finding low-quality produce inside the bag.
2 Touch, smell, and look closely.
The general rule is to go for firm, unblemished, smooth, and crisp vegetables, especially when it comes to squash, beets, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, corn, and peppers. They should all be plump and heavy, and not dried out (especially root vegetables!).
3 Look for the red flags.
When it comes to leafy greens especially, you will want to avoid wilted and slimy leaves. Loose outer leaves on bok choy, cabbage, lettuce, and brussel sprouts mean that they have been sitting in the chiller for a while. Go for dark green and deeply tinted leafy greens—and sign of yellowness means that it is old.
