Here’s how to substitute like a kitchen pro when you’re missing an ingredient (or two!) or haven’t made that trip to the grocery yet: 

 

1 cup breadcrumbs = 1 cup crackers, crushed

1 cup cake flour = 3/4 cup all-purpose flour + 2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 teaspoon lemon juice = 1/2 teaspoon vinegar

1/2 cup tomato paste = 1 cup tomato sauce, reduced to 1/2 cup

1 cup fresh milk = 1/2 cup evaporated milk + 1/2 cup water

1 cup sour cream = 1 cup plain yogurt

1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice
