You’re probably thinking that you don’t have to peel tomatoes. The skins are edible and usually not a problem! However, if you are the rare few who doesn’t like it when your stew or soup has plasticky, curled-up fruit skins in their food, you can remove the skins off by slicing an “x” on the bottoms of the tomatoes and blanching the fruits in boiling water until the skins curl and can easily be peeled off.
This hack is easier and faster to do and might just be your new favorite way of peeling tomato skins.
Food blogger jaxfoodhax from New Zealand introduced this 5-minute hack on her TikTok and Instagram accounts. The idea is simple: simmer the tomatoes until the skins can easily be peeled off the flesh of the tomatoes.
Here’s how she did it:
- 1 Slice tomatoes in half.
- 2 Heat a nonstick frying pan with a little oil over medium heat.
- 3 Place tomatoes in the pan, cut sides down and skin sides up, cover, and let cook for 5 minutes.
- 4 Remove the lid and gently peel off the skins of the tomatoes.
This method is easy. However, only the tomato skins without the stem will easily be removed. That’s why we want to add this tip if you do try this trick: core the tomatoes, too. This should help remove the skins easily, even from the ones with the side with the stalk.
