Freezing Meat: All The Tips You Need To Know

Meat can last months up to indefinitely when stored right.

When you do your quarantine shopping, you may buy more than you need at any given period and this is where your freezer will come in handy. If you aren’t doing it already, you should be taking advantage of the freezer when planning your meals. The freezer is a fantastic way to make your meals days, weeks, or even months ahead.

That’s because meat, when frozen completely and properly, can last for months for best results and will last indefinitely in extreme cases. All you have to do is make sure that you have it prepared and ready to cook when you bring it out.  

Freezers are typically set around 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) and at this temperature, meat that are completely frozen from the inside out can last weeks and even up to a year in your freezer. However, this is only valid if you store the meat right. When stored right, frozen meat after being properly thawed will be safe to cook and eat.

The worst that can happen to your meat when it’s been frozen for weeks is a loss of aroma and its color and texture may suffer, leading to less tender meats than those that are still fresh. Your meat might even suffer from freezer burn if the meat was not tightly sealed, but other than discoloration and dryness, freezer burn does not mean your food is inedible.  


Prepared frozen food such as bacon, hot dogs, and longganisa, can also last quite a long time.

Pork chops = 4 to 6 months 

Steak = 6 to 12 months 

Roast cuts = 4 to 12 months 

Ground meat = 3 to 4 months
