They say that a great cup of coffee begins with the coffee beans. The Philippines boasts of a great coffee culture and the local coffee scene is very much alive and thriving. Great coffee beans can be the start of a great cup but there are a few things that can mar this experience. The roast of the beans could be off, the grind is too coarse, the water is too hot, or even the beans could be old.

You may not be able to control how your coffee beans are roasted but you can control other things. One of these is the tool or machine we use to make our daily cup of coffee. We believe that the equipment you use when you are making that fantastic tasting cup of coffee also needs to be considered in making it.

Washing, and not just rinsing out, the coffee pot after very use is good practice. A little soap is necessary to remove the oils that collect in the pot that you didn't know was even there. It can add a trace of bitterness, oiliness, or even sourness. While a hot rinse could do the trick, a thorough washing is best every time.

This isn't the only part of the coffee machine that needs a thorough cleaning: so does the machine itself. This is a lot easier to do than you think. There is no need to take the machine to a specialist nor do you need to take it apart to get get to the nooks and crannies that might house coffee grounds.

You just need to run your coffee machine through a cleansing rinse cycle. This can remove any lingering tastes, flavors, even stuck on coffee granules that you don't want in your fresh brew! Do this as part of the last step of your regular cleaning process, so the next time you make a pot of freshly brewed coffee, you know it's going to be a great tasting one.

Here's how to do it:

  1. 1. Clean your coffee maker as usual.
  2. 2. Fill the coffee pot to its maximum fill line with a mixture of half vinegar and half water.
  3. 3. Pour this into the coffee maker, replace the coffee pot, and turn on the machine.
  4. 4. Let the vinegar water run through the coffee machine.
  5. 5. Once done, discard the vinegar water and replace it with clean water.
  6. 6. Pour this into the coffee maker, replace the coffee pot, and turn on the machine.
  7. 7. Let clean water wash out any of the vinegar water from the coffee maker.
  8. 8. Discard this water and use the machine normally.

You will want to do this regularly to avoid buildup in the machine.
