How To Clean Your Oven Racks Until They Shine

We have tips!

The biggest challenge of having an oven is cleaning it. It's not like the stove where you can easily spot the drips, drops, and food particles easily. Just like the microwave oven, it's a 360-degree cleaning job that you need to do. Not only that, the grease stains can be just as hard or even harder to remove, too.

You may be cleaning the oven walls and door regularly since these are the surfaces that splatter is easily seen but are you also cleaning your oven racks, too?

You should be cleaning them, along with the oven walls, after every use when it has cooled down, even if it's just a cursory wipe down. This will help lessen any hard grease that you don't notice the first time to harden and bond itself to the oven walls and even the oven rack.

If you find that you have oven racks that need some cleaning, the good news is that it's easier to do than cleaning the oven walls. That's because these are detachable from the oven and can be scrubbed, dunked in water, and even set out to dry.

You can clean the racks at least two ways: with baking soda and vinegar soak or with a tried and tested soap. Here's how to do it using the baking soda and vinegar soak:

  1. 1 Remove the oven racks from the cool oven. Place in a basin that's big enough to fit the rack.
  2. 2 Make a thick paste of baking soda and water, and spread this onto the oven racks.
  3. 3 Pour in a mixture of 1 cup vinegar for every 3 cups hot water until submerged. (It will bubble.) Cover the basin with plastic and let sit for 45 minutes.
  4. 4 Remove the plastic and scrub the oven rack with the rough side of a dishwashing sponge. Rinse and dry.

The other method is easier but it does require using a certain product. Our favorite is Joy Easy Spray followed by Mr. Muscle Kitchen Cleaner

Here's how to use these two kitchen helpers:

  1. 1 Remove the oven racks from the cool oven. Place in a basin that's big enough to fit the rack.
  2. 2 Spray the oven racks well with the kitchen cleaners. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how tough the stains are. (You'll see the grease release from the rack and transfer to the foam.)
  3. 3 Scrub the oven rack with the rough side of a dishwashing sponge. Rinse. If necessary, repeat Step 2. Rinse and dry.
