How to Make Flavored Sugar

Add a fruity twist to plain white sugar! Here's how.

Suddenly bored with plain white sugar? How else to enjoy the granulated stuff? Add a fruity twist! Use it to sweeten your hot or cold tea; to line the rim of a cocktail glass; or to use in place of regular sugar when baking cakes or cookies.



Our take:
Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and the grated zest of a medium-sized citrus fruit (think lemons, oranges, limes). Rub the zest into the sugar granules by crushing it with the back of a spoon. This will extract the oil from the zest and allow the sugar to absorb it. Keep the citrus sugar in an airtight container and use as desired within two to three days.
