Tips on Buying Fish + Meat at the Wet Market

New to market shopping? Keep these pointers in mind so you get the freshest meat, fish, and chicken available: 

FISH

Eyes must be bright, flesh should be firm, and it should have no foul smell. If it smells like the sea, it’s perfect. The scales adhere tightly to the skin of the fish.

BEEF

Should have a bright cherry red color, without gray or brown spots. Should be firm to the touch, not soft. Should not be hold excess liquid nor is it warm to the touch.

CHICKEN

 Should have slightly shiny skin, but not wet. Its skin should be uniform in color and have no bruises. Check the wings too—they should be supple when moved.



PORK

Should be pinkish in color, not red. Firm to the touch, not soft.
