5 Hot Chocolate Upgrades You Have to Try

One of the best things to put you in a jolly mood this holiday season is a warm mug of cocoa! You can go traditional and make a thick tsokolate using tablea tablets and a batirol. Or for a quick fix, a ready-mix powder can yield great, effortless results. Here are a few ideas on how you can make that yummy hot chocolate cup even more special.

1 Sweet and spicy

Cocoa + marshmallows + cayenne
You can never go wrong with the cocoa-and-marshmallow combo. Add a kick to it with a sprinkling of cayenne pepper.

2 Espresso Love

Cocoa + espresso + chocolate shaving and cream
Add a shot of your favorite homemade brew. Coffee also enhances the flavor of chocolate so you're in for a tasty treat. Top with a dollop of whipped cream, some chocolate shavings, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce or salted caramel. Yum!

3 Sugar and spice

Cocoa + star anise + cloves + cardamom + cinnamon+ vanilla + milk
If you like chai lattes, you'll love this! In a saucepan over low heat, heat 2 cups milk with 4 cloves, 1 cinnamon bark (or a 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder), 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg powder, and 2 cardamom pods. Strain then add your cocoa. Sweeten to taste.

4 For adults only

Cocoa + alcohol + cinnamon
Here's a treat for the adults! Spike your hot cocoa with a splash of rum. You can use vodka, bourbon, or other liqueurs like Contreau or Amaretto, too. Add whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon powder and more powdered cocoa.

Cocoa + candy canes
Place crushed candy canes in a small bowl. Dip the ring of your mugs or glasses in water, then dip into the candies. Fill with cocoa, and enjoy the minty flavor with every sip. The kids will enjoy this, too!
