President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has issued directives to the Department of Agriculture to prioritize the food security of the country and prepare for a food crisis. This was the first of a series of directives that targets rice, corn, livestock, and poultry since Marcos took over. He is also the Agriculture Secretary.

In a Department of Agriculture press release dated July 5, the president said during his first Executive Committee Meeting with the DA, "We have to think very hard about making sure that people have sufficient food, that is number one, at the price that they can afford. Because again, it's useless to have food if they cannot afford it anyway."

The President said that the issue of food prices and availability of food was an important topic.

The president also proposed programs already in place to help alleviate any food supply issues with short- and long-term plans including two Masagana programs. The Masagana programs, 150 and 200 respectively, seek to bring down the production costs of rice while increasing the production of rice. This is similar to the Masagana 99 program his father, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., implemented while he was in power.

This is in line with his election promise to bring down rice prices to P20 per kilo

The current food crisis that has affected other countries include Singapore which imports 90% of its food supply. Meanwhile, the bird flu has ravaged the population of birds, including chickens, which may also account for the chicken shortage seen in the West. Chicken has become even more scarce since Malaysia stopped exporting chickens last June to stem a shortage of poultry.
