This Vigan Ancestral Home Serves Tapas, Wine, and a 12-Course Degustation

Just a few steps away from Vigan's Calle Crisologo, Casa Lourdes serves gastronomic dishes that will surprise and delight curious travelers. Built in 1875 by Don Florendo and Doña Maria Verzosa, the former ancestral home now houses two restaurants. On the first floor, you'll find Calle Brewery, which serves homegrown craft beers, smoked meats, and fresh seafood. On the second floor, you can have a taste of Spanish cuisine at the Tapas and Wine Bar by Titania or enjoy a 12-course degustation menu featuring reinvented Ilocano dishes.

The Tapas and Wine Bar by Titania features Vigan-style tapas made from locally sourced ingredients. You'll find your traditional favorites, such as the Bacalao a la Viscana (made with local salted fish), Rabo de Toro (cow's tail), Chistora (sausages), Callos (tripe), and Gambas (shrimp). If you need your carb fix, have your fill of freshly-baked baguettes and soft rolls. You can also order a cheese plate or a platter of cold cuts and pair it with your favorite wines.

In this tapas dish, the fries and egg balance out the chorizo's saltiness. It's best paired with a refreshing glass of sparkling Sangria!

The bar is well stocked with both Old World and New World wines. "Old World wines are from European countries, such as France, Italy, and Spain, while New World wines come from Chile, Australia, USA, and more," explains Paige Meneses of Titania Wine Cellar, which is the first importer of wine in the Philippines. "For a place like this, it's nice to have both varieties. Just like beers, there are different kinds of wine and different people have different preferences."

The deconstructed pinakbet contains vegetables such as squash, ampalaya, okra, and string beans. The tangy and bitter flavors perfectly complement the seabass.

If you're trying a variety of tapas, Paige recommends going with Mapu, a medium-bodied Chilean red wine. "With tapas, you have fish, chorizo, and other dishes, so you want a wine that's versatile enough to go with different kinds of small plates." If you're looking for a fruity drink, try the bar's special sangria blend, which is topped with sparkling wine for a touch of fizz and sweetness.

Groups of eight or more can experience the Ilocano Tasting Menu or degustation, a 12-course meal that Chef Robby Goco calls "a comprehensive study on Ilocano cuisine." For P1,800 per person, you'll get to try Ilocano favorites such as poqui poqui, lomo lomo, bagnet, pinakbet, and more, but served in surprisingly unique ways.

"My mom is from Pangasinan so I'm very familiar with Ilocano cooking," says Chef Robby, who prepared the menu together with Chef Chester Velas. "Each dish in the degustation still gives you the same comfort that Ilocano food brings, but we found ways to elevate it and make it better."

To add to the dining experience, the servers take you on a virtual tour of Vigan by telling stories about the place and sharing interesting trivia as each dish is served. At the end of the meal, you'll come home with a satisfied belly, a wealth of new knowledge, and a renewed appreciation for Vigan City and Ilocano cuisine.
