Nicole Ponseca’s Filipino Cookbook Is A Semifinalist In 2019 James Beard Awards
The theme of this year's James Beard Awards is "Good Food for Good."
I Am A Filipino: This Is How We Cook is a best-selling cookbook that has been included in a great deal of international food book awards, like The New Yorker's "The Best Food Books of 2018" and Los Angeles Times' "10 Cookbooks To Give And Get This Holiday Season." This year, this recipe book continues to find recognition with a nomination for a 2019 James Beard Award-which is dubbed as the Oscars of the culinary world!
I Am A Filipino: This Is How We Cook, a semifinalist under James Beard Award's International Books category this year, was co-written by trailblazing restaurateur Nicole Ponseca with Miguel Trinidad. Ponseca also co-owns buzzy NYC- based restaurants, Jeepney and Maharlika, with Trinidad. This cookbook is an homage to contemporary Filipino recipes that, according to their official website, "capture the unexpected and addictive flavors of [Philippine's] vibrant and diverse cuisine."
Three Filipino-American chefs this year made it as semifinalists for the 2019 James Beard Awards: Tom Cunanan of Bad Saint is a semifinalist under the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category, Margarita Manzke of Republique is a semifinalist under the Outstanding Pastry Chef category, and Sheldon Simeon of Lineage is a semifinalist under the Best New Restaurant award.
The James Beard Awards Gala night is scheduled for May 6 in Chicago, while the media award winners will be announced on April 26. We wish these Filipinos the best of luck!
