If you've been following recent global events in Europe, you might think that the food you buy would not be affected. While Ukraine may not be one of our leading food suppliers, there might be an impact that we might feel the longer the conflict continues.

In a news report from Malaya last March 3, the Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said the government agency will help monitor the suggested retail prices (SRP) of basic goods and commodities if these will be affected by the rise in gas prices.

Already, the price for cooking at home has gone up. According to a March 1 report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), liquified petroleum gas or LPG prices in Metro Manila went up from a low of P794 per 11-kilogram cylinder to around P1,000. This is due in part to the LPG price increase most gas companies implemented at the start of March that raised it to almost P8 per liter. For a typical household, that means it costs more to cook food at home.
