PRICE ALERT: It's Okay To Use Red Onions For Cooking From Now On

If you have always wondered whether you can use red onions or white onions in a recipe, don't worry anymore! You can cook with red onions just like you can cook with white onions, so go ahead and reach for the more affordable red onion than the white or yellow variety when you go ingredient shopping this week.Â
That's because white onions just got more expensive.Â
In a Manila Times article, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said farmers have switched to planting red onions instead of white onions which means there are more red onions on the market than there are white or yellow onions. This affects recipes that specifically use white onions in their recipes, such as French onion soups and even toppings for sandwiches and burgers which normally use white or yellow onions.Â
White onions have skyrocketed to almost P400 per kilo in some palengkes, the article said. The good news is that red onions are still affordable which has remained a moderately steady P140 per kilo this past week.Â
Unfortunately, onions are not the only ingredient that saw a price increase over the weekend. Refined sugar or white sugar went up to P100 per kilo as per the price monitoring watch of the DA dated August 8, 2022. Sugar has seen a regular rise in prices since January but finally breached the triple-digit prices Monday.Â

These prices are the average prices sourced from palengkes or farmers markets in the Metro Manila area, specifically those in Commonwealth, Guadalupe, Las Piñas, Malabon, Marikina, Mega Q-Mart, Muntinlupa, Muñoz, Pasay, Pasig, Pritil, Quinta, and San Andres. The prices of sugar and onions may be lower or higher in supermarkets, grocery stores, sari sari stores, and other places where these products may be purchased.
