For the designated grocery shoppers of the household, this might not come as a surprise to you anymore: prices of pork, beef, chicken, fish, vegetables, and fruits have gone up.

The price of pork, in particular, is a hot topic right now because it's almost the same price or even more expensive than beef. According to the Department of Agriculture's (DA) February 3 price watch report, kasim costs P350 per kilo while beef brisket costs P340 per kilo. Yes, that's a P10 price difference!

The price spikes are attributed  to the African Swine Fever (ASF) that still exists in parts of the country. The DA confirmed ASF was present in the Philippines on September 19, 2019 and it's been more than a year since the outbreak.

Comparing the prices between February 5, 2020 and February 5, 2021 shows that the price of pork and beef brisket are more expensive by P150 and P40 respectively. The price of whole chicken increased by P20, while tilapia's prevailing prices remain the same.

President Rodrigo Duterte addressed these struggles by signing Executive Order No. 124, which imposes a 60-day price ceiling on pork and chicken products in the National Capital Region starting February 8, 2021.
