Spicy Noodle Challenge: Here Are 3 Other Ways to Enjoy These Too-Spicy Bowls

If you can't finish off the whole bowl of Samyang instant noodles, we have some ideas.

You've probably seen the photos and videos on social media: people have been trying the spicy noodle challenge and documenting their attempts. Some can't go past a few spoonfuls and can't quite finish off a bowl of the tongue-numbing noodle soup. Don't want to waste the springy noodles and flavorful sauce? We have a few suggestions:

1 Samyang Noodles + Cabbage + Carrots + Egg + Japanese Condiments

Add Japanese flavors to this Korean noodle bowl and make a spicy version of the savory pancake. The addition of veggies and the sweet/salty/umami flavors of the condiments will help curb the spice from the noodles.

Noodle Okonomiyaki

Sauté 1 small red onion, sliced, 1 garlic clove, chopped, 1 cup cabbage, shredded, and 1/2 cup carrot, grated, large, in 2 tablespoons oil in a nonstick frying pan until just softened. Transfer to a bowl. Add 1 large egg and leftover noodles to the cabbage mixture, and toss to mix. Season with ground pepper to taste.

Return mixture to the nonstick frying pan in batches and cook until browned on both sides. (Use a plate to flip the okonomiyaki over.) Remove from the heat to a plate. Spread top with tonkatsu sauce, shredded nori, and a drizzle of Japanese mayo. Cut into wedges and serve while hot. Makes 8 wedges.

Noodles + All-Purpose Cream + Cream Cheese + Luncheon Meat + Peas

If you really can't stand the heat of the noodles, then you'll have to add some creaminess to tame the spice. This recipe not only has all-purpose cream stirred in, it's got cream cheese, too. It's a deliciously creamy noodle dish with a spicy kick that rivals any the Italians can ever make.

Creamy and Spicy Pasta

Microwave 1/4 cup frozen green peas covered in water on High for 2-3 minutes. Cook until softened and plump then drain. Set aside.

Slice 2 slices luncheon meat into small cubes, and saute in oil in a nonstick pan until crispy. Transfer to a plate.

Sauté 1 clove garlic, chopped, in the same oil. Add 1/3 cup cream and 2 tablespoons cream cheese spread and cook until heated through, stirring to melt the spread. Toss sauce with green peas and leftover noodles until coated. Transfer to plates and top with luncheon meat. Serve warm. Makes 2 servings.

Noodles + Peanuts + Pechay + Sweet Corn

Love spicy but the fiery kind? Then, this is the recipe for you! Elevate a saucy noodle dish into a brothy one by stirring in some peanut butter to add a little creaminess (sans the cloying flavors) and some sweet veggies to add another layer of flavor and texture to your bowl.

Spicy Peanut Ramen

Heat 2 cups chicken stock in a large saucepan and stir in 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter. Bring to a boil then simmer. Add pechay, corn, and leftover noodles and cook until just heated through. Transfer noodles to a bowl and top with pechay, corn, and more peanuts before pouring over the soup. Makes 2 servings.
