Here’s How To Keep Your Food And Water Safe From Ashfall

Taal Volcano had a phreatic explosion at around 1 p.m. on January 12, Sunday. The steam-driven explosion spewed ash from the volcano, affecting areas in Calabarazon (Southern Tagalog region including Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), with ashfall reaching Metro Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alarm to Alert Level 4 at 9 p.m. on January 12. According to the advisory, "This means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days."

Aside from health effects which include coughing, nose, throat, and eye irritation, difficulty in breathing and bronchitis-like symptoms, everyone affected by the ashfall should make sure to keep food and water safe from ashfall. Ashfall is a mixture of rock, mineral, and even glass particles expelled from a volcano. According to the International Volcanic Health Hazard Network (IVHHN) website, here are some things we should do to keep food and water safe from volcanic ashfall:

  • 1 Vegetables and fruits should be washed thoroughly. Cover food and water containers.
  • 2 If there is ash in your water, let it settle and then use the clear water.
  • 3 If there is a lot of ash in the water supply, do not use your dishwasher or washing machine.
  • 4 Stock enough non-perishable food for atleast 72 hours for family and pets.
  • 5 Make sure there's enough drinking water for at least 72 hours (one gallon or 3-4 litres per person per day).
